I discovered a passion for the adrenalin rush of surfing a kayak through my
love of Sea Kayaking. While my rolling and bracing skills developed very
quickly this way I soon found the limitations of a 5metre long craft in the
impact zone.
From this I went looking for something with more control, quicker turns
and the ability to really carve with speed on a wave. I tried White Water
kayaks, however these again lacked the necessary direction control and also
lacked the speed just due to design. The answer for me was the Mega Prowler
and most recently the Mega Neutron S-Lite. Both different boats with their
own benefits in different conditions. These kayaks opened up a whole new
world in the surf. With a purpose built hull shape for speed, fins and a
hard rail edge for direction control I was not only dealing more easily with
bigger conditions but I was enjoying my new found maneuverability and this
allowed me to understand how to read a wave and get the most out of my ride.

What I love about surf kayaking is the freedom of being totally in the
moment, focused on one thing and putting everything else out of my mind.
In October 2007 I will be
representing Australia at the World Surf Kayaking Championships to be held
at Mundaka/Bakio in Northern Spain. These
championships are held every two years with the top ranked surf kayakers
from each country qualifying to compete in team and individual events. It
will be an exciting challenge and I look forward to the experiences it will
bring. With new technologies and innovative surf kayak design being explored
more and more this exciting sport and its competition element is fast
evolving.
The purely
unmatched feeling of speed you get when flying down a wave is what gets you
out of bed early in the morning and looking for those perfect conditions.
